Eye disorders and diseases are common problems afflicting both children and adults. Recent research has indicated that ophthalmology problems in adults can be attributed to cataracts, refractive errors, glaucoma and surgical complications mainly. Apollo Clinic Kolkata’s experienced and trained ophthalmologists deal with the whole range of diseases and disorders of the eye with the help of advanced equipment and technologies.

What is Ophthalmology?

Ophthalmology is the speciality branch of medicine that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye, experienced by both children as well as adults. At Apollo Clinic Kolkata Ophthalmology Centre, we address a wide range of eye and related conditions and provide the facility of personalised management of their problems.

What is the first step?

At our Ophthalmology Centre, the diagnosis of the eye problems starts with a detailed physical examination and assimilation of medical and genetic history. It is followed by specific tests such as:

Subjective Refraction Determination: Using a reading table of letters, numbers and symbols displayed on a screen, the visual acuity of the eye is determined. If the visual acuity does not meet the required standards, corrections are made using corrective lenses placed in an individual frame.

Snellen’s Vision Chart: The Snellen vision chart is used to check if prescription lenses are needed to improve vision. During this screening, you will be asked to stand at a distance, cover one eye and read the letters on the chart, beginning from the top and working your way to the bottom.

Ishihara Colour Test: This is one of the most widely used colour blindness tests. The patient is expected to read a set of colour dotted plates, each showing a number or a path.

How can we help you?

Based on the diagnosis of your condition, our ophthalmologist prescribes the most suited treatment procedures. Although it may vary from case to case, some of the commonly prescribed treatments include retina imaging, surgical interventions and dry eye management.

As eye problems and ophthalmology diseases significantly impact the quality of life, our ophthalmology services also extend to psychological support, health education and advanced care planning. In some cases where intensive care may be required, our medical practitioners recommend specific treatment procedures. These include conditions such as:

Cataract: Depending on the extent of the disorder, vision is corrected with prescription glasses or lenses.

Glaucoma: Once this disorder is detected, steps such as prescription eye drops, laser surgery or even microsurgery will is recommended to prevent the problem from progressing and leading to blindness.

Squint: Oculoplastic corrective surgery is often recommended in most cases.

Cornea: Dry eye management is recommended to prevent the eye from drying out, thus ensuring that the eye is well moisturised.
